The Economics of Creativity
The findings of Brevard Cultural Alliance’s 2008 Economic Contribution of Nonprofit Arts and Culture study are remarkable! Some of the highlights:
- For every $1 of government support, the arts return $8.50 in tax revenue
- An additional $22 million was generated indirectly in the local economy
- The nonprofit arts and cultural industry supports 624 full- and part-time jobs
- For every 3 of those 624 jobs, 1 additional job is created elsewhere in the area
- For every $1 of cultural tourism development funding, the arts give back $27 in related spending by cultural tourists
- During fiscal 2007, the nonprofit arts and culture industry contributed over $42 million to Brevard's economy
- Almost 1 million people attended Brevard cultural events during FY 2007
- The average Brevard County cultural attendee spent $20.80 per event
- 20 percent of event attendees were cultural tourists; these non-local attendees spent an average of $38.17 per cultural event
A cross-section of cultural activity is represented by the participating groups, including museums, music, dance, historical, literary, festivals, the Zoo, and performing arts venues. Twenty-eight Brevard cultural organizations participated in this study, which was commissioned by Brevard Cultural Alliance and conducted by Praecipio EFS, Inc., an economic, financial, and statistical consulting firm.
